Day Care
The mattress hums with sleep
silence blankets the bedroom
slow, even breaths
punctuate the silence
suddenly, the silence is shattered
into a hundred blaring shards
painfully injured, silence sharply broken
an alarm clock screams
harsh, angry wails
demanding immediate attention
like a scorned child
an alarm clock screams
the bed groans softly
a hand pounces from under the covers
reprimanding the shrill outburst
with a disapproving slap
silence restores
a few minutes afforded
the blankets rise and fall
slow, even breaths resume
an alarm clock screams
with looming discord
flooding the room
with hateful repetition

WelcomeRachel DiGiacomo is a senior at Academic Magnet High School. She plans to my wikipage! Clickattend USC Honors College next fall. Rachel has always enjoyed writing and loved the links onchance to learn more about the creative process during this class. Although she often had a hard time waking her brain up first period in order to be creative, she generally has no problem spouting off fresh and funky ideas. Even though Mr. Wright called her down numerous times for "doing the rightwrong things", she generally looked foreward to view my work. his class and whatever exciting adventures awaited.

Featured Journal Entry #1 -Amimal Point of View
Taranchula
Oh my gosh, I need to shave. Every step reminds me of the horrors of no shave November. My nobby knees collide as I embark on my morning jog. I really need some new shoes. I couldn't find my eight shoe this morning so I had to snag one of Uncle's Tom's trainers and boy is it ugly It is too big for me so I'm off my usual pace.
This is obnoxious. my front four legs keep wobbling. I guess I shouldn't have had that third fly last night...

This piece was my contribution to the 3DSP story. Writing this story was a true test of my suspension of disbelief. I really enjoyed the freedom such a creative story gave me to write whatever I wanted.
Doctor Raven
The following journal entries were found at the Annex. Although the exact date they were written is unknown, they are believed to have been written in the days leading up to the Event. The author is a nameless nurse who was working with patients affected by Frei fever.

dangerous disease.
But, I really think some of the patients would have survived the Frei fever. My daily checkups show that the strongest, young men and women are often recovering before they disappear. I am afraid to tell this to any of the other nurses because we are under constant surveillance. The other nurses accept Doctor Raven’s explanation for needing the cameras that record our every word and action. They believe that the cameras are there to help the doctor notice any early symptoms of Frei fever among the staff and nurses. But I think there might be another reason. Doctor Raven is the only one who has access to the surveillance footage. He has an unnerving habit of appearing in the doorway right before we call for him, right when a patient seems to be recovering.
Entry 2
I do not know what the date is. We are so isolated from the rest of the world and even the rest of the base that all the days blur together and I have no way of knowing the actual date. Doctor Raven is the only one who is allowed to leave the building and therefore our only link with the outside. I envy him. I wish I could come and go as I please instead of constantly attending to the steady stream of new patients. But I accept my duty as a nurse and all I want is to help these poor people.

This short story is an example of a 55 Fiction story. Using only 55 words I packed enough for the reader to picture this scene. This assignment taught me to not waste words.
Late for Class
Jennifer raced down the abandoned street, bouncing through every pot hole. Already late, she sped recklessly through the dense fog. Suddenly, a train’s loud horn flooded the car with relief. As the stripped arms folded stubbornly across the tracks, Jennifer silently celebrated, “I’ll blame the train… good thing I’m not giving a test first period.”
